Feed back

I am truly sorry for late for posting.

good point
We  gave a presentation in a loud voice.
Points are clear and organized.
Our mission statements and goals were very specific and easy to understand.
The topic was very attractive and since up to date problem, it made someone in a class think deeply about streaming services.

bad point
Some one wonder how to protect CD, because we only focus on streaming service. I realized that if we support streaming services and it will become mainstream, the decreasing of sales of CD will get more acute. We should have care about CD to make whole of music industry satisfy.

Question and Answer from 10 to 15

10, What do you think should record companies do to sale more CDs?
-------I think the recording company should focus on people who are fifteen and sixteen, because they feel it is difficult for them to buy and download using electronic device.

11, There are many people who use streaming services in a wrong way. Should we punish them strictly?
------Yes, we should, because people who create and perform music make living. They should be evaluated correctly.

12, Why did people come not to buy CDs? because of the price, quality of sound, or inconvenience?
------ i think that inconvenience is the best appropriate reason. More and more  people don't want to go to the CD shop. 13, Is it difficult for you to download music or video from the Internet?
---------not so difficult.
14, Why do musicians think that streaming services are not good?
-------Because they can't get enough money when their songs are contributed for free.
15, These days, CDs and records are getting popular especially among young people. What makes people get interested in them again?
-------CDs' design or their jacket are really fascinating. this is the reason for it, i think.

Survey Summary

At first I would like to show my deepest gratitude. I am grateful for all of your support. Thanks to your kindness and cooperation, I can gather more than 40 answers and prepare for presentation.

I was surprised at the number of people who know about streaming services. About 80 percent of people have heard about streaming service and almost all of people use You Tube in daily life. I realized again that You Tube is popular.  You Tube makes us possible to access easily  to music video and live video. We don't mention about You Tube in NGO's presentation, but You Tube causes some problems. Apps that allow you to download video on You Tube for free has been one of the target that artist hate. Needless to say, this is illegal. In order to let every people be willing to use You Tub, we should take some steps.

I asked whether cost is important or not, when you buy music. 6 percent of people answered cost is very important, and more than 60 percent of people answered cost is important. I learned from these answers why streaming services are getting popular gradually on a global scale. People want to get music at a low cost. I thought that cost is not important so much, because music is more valuable than money.

People demand ans use streaming services more than I expected before searching streaming services. I think demand will cause more serious problem, because company of streaming services try to offer their service to make users happy without complying with artist's demand.

Question and answer (from 26 to 30)

26,Do you know the app that allows you to listen to music for free ? Do you use?
There are many apps that allows you to listen  to music for free. The google players offer some 250 apps for downloading MP3 files to smart phones and tablets powered by its Android software. Google has been target for complaining from music industry. I think google should take some steps.  If google will regret, problem will become more serious.

27, How much money users on streaming service pay for a monthly plan, will artist be satisfied?
It depends on artist. Taylor thinks that free trial is unfair for artist's working.  Thom Yourke is not satisfied with small rate. He said, "Spotify offers a limited free streaming service, and an unlimited service at tiers of £5 and £10 a month. But some artists have complained that it is less effective for them to make music available there than to sells CDs and digital downloads because the per-stream payments are comparatively tiny."

28, What percentage of revenue from streaming services artist can get?
Spotify pays royalties for all of the listening that occurs on our service by distributing nearly 70% of all the revenues that we receive back to rights holders. Spotify contributes to music business by giving 70 percent rate. The rate is same as Apple's streaming services. Apple's revenue split is only a few percentage points more than the industry average of 70 percent, which Spotify also says it pays.

30, How long copyright will be protected?

For works published after 1977, the copyright lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years. However, if the work is a work for hire (that is, the work is done in the course of employment or has been specifically commissioned) or is published anonymously or under a pseudonym, the copyright lasts between 95 and 120 years, depending on the date the work is published.
All works published in the United States before 1923 are in the public domain. Works published after 1922, but before 1978 are protected for 95 years from the date of publication. If the work was created, but not published, before 1978, the copyright lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years. However, even if the author died over 70 years ago, the copyright in an unpublished work lasts until December 31, 2002. And if such a work is published before December 31, 2002, the copyright will last until December 31, 2047.

Question and answer (from 21 to 25)

21, How much the total financial damage of illegal site to artist is in a year in Japan?
Association of Japanese record assumed that financial damage in 2010 sum up to about seven hundred million yen. This amount of damage is eight times larger than the amount of sales in a legal way. I was shocked at this statistics. It was natural for someone to rise up against illegal download.

22, What benefit  is needed to get interested in CD?
Tickets that allows people to vote for a girl on AKB general election who they give their support to is good for making more profit . This benefit and election is so topical in Japan. This benefit arouse fans to get interested in CD, because they want to vote for a girl they support to.

23, We often see a video on YouTube has been deleted. What is boundary between remained video and deleted video?

A difference between remained video and deleted one is whether posters invade copyright or not. If artists or label record that artist belongs to admit or create account and post by themselves, this video will be remained. I fear that one day streaming services offer music without confirming artist and label record's will.

18, If you are artist , will you permit people listen to your music on streaming service?
I will not permit. If I can sell my music at the same price as shop or  iTunes, I want to permit. It is difficult to get money by contributing music to streaming service. I heard that it takes 300 downloads to buy a cup of coffee. I will not be satisfied with royalty late.
Some artist, for example Taylor Swift,  complain about system of streaming service. Taylor posted her opinion on tumbler. She thinks three months trial for free is so long, and it is unfair to ask someone to work for nothing. She worries about indie band that does not have enough money to continue their music activity. So she thinks all users on streaming services should pay money.
Thom Yorke also complain about the system of streaming.

Question and Answer for Q7

Question7, In the long run, streaming services are good tools for indies musicians, because it is possible for them to get known by more people via streaming services. Actually, statistics showed that people know new music and  musicians on the web page. Therefore, we don’t always deny it. Depending on how to use it,   it is very useful.  What do you think of it?

Answer: I think Streaming services are good tools for indies musicians, because if they contribute their music to streaming services cites, and people like their song, it is possible to get attention by people and their dream come true.
Recently, Taylor Swift wrote her opinion about streaming services on her tumblr page, because Apple music were going to sale some musicians' songs for free. <http://taylorswift.tumblr.com/post/122071902085/to-apple-love-taylor> "To apple, Love Taylor" Web, July 13th, 2015       She told about this issue that "This is about the new artist or band that has just released their first single and will not be paid for its success. This is about the young songwriter who just got his or her first cut and thought that the royalties from that would get them out of debt." She mention and care about newcomer artists. After I read this article, I thought streaming services are really good to get known by more people, because people who often listen to music using streaming services want to get latest music information as soon as possible.

How do we deal with the problem of the issue? How should we use them legally?

Question and Answer for Q6

Question6, What images of streaming services do you have?

I have good images of streaming services. I think streaming services are really good tools for us, but fewer Japanese people know about streaming services than foreigners. What is the reason? Mikirou Enomoto, who is an expert of music mentioned the reason. <http://nikkan-spa.jp/513538> ”音楽ストリーミング配信が日本で広がらない理由” Also, it is true that there are people who use streaming services in a wrong way. Therefore, people may well have a bad image of them.

However, there are streaming services cites which get definite money from people, so not all of the services is illegal. Though we have to pay money for some cites, it's not so expensive. In contrast, when we buy CDs, we sometimes pay a lot of money. For example, iTunes cost us only 250 yen to buy the one piece.

Additionally, we can use them anytime we want as far as we have a computer device or electronic equipments. we can listen to music or watch videos on the train or bus and even on the street while walking. Streaming services are really useful.

Question and Answer for Q5

Question5: What is the good points of these two(streaming services and CDs)?

Answer: <Good points of CDs>
People who buy CD like its format and its quality of sounds. Though they need some space to keep them, people are likely to enjoy collecting. These days, recording company started to sale CDs with added benefits such as posters, tickets, and special videos and more. For example, one of the most famous Japanese idle, AKB48 sale CDs with tickets which they can meet the members of the group.  Another example is that J soul Brothers sold their CD with invitation to the back-stage of their performance.
"なぜ日本人は未だにCDを買い続けるのか”<http://jp.vice.com/program/noisey/7961>Web, July 22nd, 2015

            <Good points of Streaming services>
These days, more and more people use streaming services. There are 3
reasons I want to suggest.
Firstly, it is really easy to get songs. By one click, we can get our favorite songs and don't have to pay money frequently even if we buy them many times.
Secondly, before we decide to buy them, it is possible to have the record played. Moreover, though the record companies are going to sale them as an album, we can choose the one piece form it.
The last one is that compared with the CDs we don't have to create space for keeping them. We can save songs as data in our computer device or electric equipment.

Survey Summary(International)

First of all, I would like to say thank you to all respondents who make time for cooperating with our survey. 32 people answered questions. Your answers were very useful materials for us. Thank you very much. Now, I want to share and summarize the results of our survey.

In our survey, We could know about peoples' present music life.
All respondents said they like music and about 93% of people listen to it every day. At least they listen to music once a week. From these answers, we could know that music is really familiar for us and it catch on our life deeply. We think this is because technology have been developing.
Therefore we asked people whether they have iPod or Walkman. To this question, 85.71% of people said yes. In other words, they put music into iPod, Walkman and some sort of electronic equipment, and they seem to carry them when they go out.
Next, we got interested in where they listen to music. Most people likely to do it on the train. Some people listen to music while walking. Almost all people who cooperated with our survey are students, so we expected that they go to school, go work and go back home listening to music.
How do they get latest music information? They got new information from the Internet. Some people say that they often pay attention to suggestion on YouTube page, twitter or other music sites. Young people always tend to catch up with something new. Therefore they always check music sites.

Through our survey, we could learn music is really necessary for our daily life. People don't listen to music using electronic equipment alternative to CD deck.
The more technology will develop, the more our music life will change.

A page that is not useful.

I found out a site that can not be trusted. This site says that there is a debate over streaming services between consumers and artist. There are two reasons why I think so. First reason is unsuitable example. This blog mentioned about Swedish artist as an example. But it is hard to imagine that issues about streaming services are big problem for famous artist around the world, because this Swedish artist is not famous so much. Second one is a link. URL is putted on the web, but you can not jump to a homepage at the link destination.
Therefor I can not trust this site.

Criticism of streaming services

Spotify is  the most popular subscription service, with 40million users around the world. There are two types of users. One is free user who listen to music with advertising, and the other is  pay for monthly plans.

Thanks to convince and  low cost, spotify are growing but have been frequent targets of complaints from artists over royalty rates.

The Ceo of  spotify  boasts that  spotify contributes improvement in music world by giving 70% of profit.
But in my  opinion spotify  should  not be  advertising that their user make revenue for artist and band. This advertising let people listen to music on spotify instead of buying CD or buying  it on iTunes with thinking that they support their favorite artist.

But in fact it takes about 300 downloads for one member of one member of an independent band to be able to buy a cup of coffee, and if they have a record label it takes many more.

For me, the difference between streaming service and free music illegal is so little. I think user on spotify should listen to music at a rate that will surpass iTunes or CD revenue.
So I suggest you to buy music if you want to support your favorite artist and band.

To become famous

I am a university student somewhere in Japan. My dream is to become a musician.
Streaming services…..
What images of streaming services do you have? It’s something kind of dangerous? Or difficult things?
Streaming services are very convenient tools for us, because we can feel free to enjoy listening to music and watching video anytime and anywhere if only we have smartphone or ipod or ipad. Moreover, it doesn’t cost too much. Students like us who don’t have much money can use tools without being worried about money.

The action that Taylor Swift deleted her entire songs from spotify became a hot topic.
This incident has been featured in many countries, and it became a controversial issue. Actually, what she’s done was seen as an effort to drive up sale of her new album called 1989.
Probably, this result was good for Taylor and record company in terms of benefit. However, in the long run, they could be satisfied with the result, because Taylor is already a famous singer all over the world. Unfortunately, in not famous musicians’ case, there is no opportunity to get known by people.
According to the survey by Recording Industry Association of Japan, more and more people know latest songs and new musicians via free music download sites ( ranking in third in 2013).
So, streaming services are good tools for not only us but indies musicians.

Next, I would talk about convenience of streaming services. If we have to use CDs, we have to put data into computers first. Then we transport to iPod and walkman. It's a little complicated, isn't it?
Using streaming services, we can download music and videos by one click. we don't have to go to the CD shop either! It's seems to be difficult for older people, but it's not impossible.

Actually, I use YStream.
It's link to YouTube. Once we download music from YouTube, we can listen to music anywhere even if there is no wi-fi. Moreover, we don't have to pay money. That's why i like this streaming services, and it has a good reputations.

Some of  you may worried about economic problems. CDs are more expensive than music which can be download on music sites. However, actually, more and more people rely on streaming services, so music company should contribute more good services via music sites. More people like to use streaming services, and pay money for that, the better economic situation will become.
