Criticism of streaming services

Spotify is  the most popular subscription service, with 40million users around the world. There are two types of users. One is free user who listen to music with advertising, and the other is  pay for monthly plans.

Thanks to convince and  low cost, spotify are growing but have been frequent targets of complaints from artists over royalty rates.

The Ceo of  spotify  boasts that  spotify contributes improvement in music world by giving 70% of profit.
But in my  opinion spotify  should  not be  advertising that their user make revenue for artist and band. This advertising let people listen to music on spotify instead of buying CD or buying  it on iTunes with thinking that they support their favorite artist.

But in fact it takes about 300 downloads for one member of one member of an independent band to be able to buy a cup of coffee, and if they have a record label it takes many more.

For me, the difference between streaming service and free music illegal is so little. I think user on spotify should listen to music at a rate that will surpass iTunes or CD revenue.
So I suggest you to buy music if you want to support your favorite artist and band.

  1. Thanks to the development of the streaming services, we are now able to listen to CDs or even watch DVDs for free. This situation is surely making CD companies difficult to sell the products ever than before. In my opinion, to get over this circumstance, I can come up with two strategies. Firstly, I recommend the companies to add some extra privileges only for those who came to buy CDs which cannot be obtained in streaming services. Secondly, it is almost unstoppable to stop the young people from using steaming services. Instead, I think targeting old people who do not have more knowledge on internets than young people is more efficient to sell CDs. Finally, I would like to know how many illegal streaming services existing in the world.

  2. Before starting this project on controversial issues, I never even heard of Spotify. I myself always download music from Youtube or other downloading sites. I always had the image that CDs were a waste to buy because for 1. music is downloadable 2. there is a high possibility that you may get bored of the singer/band. But after reading on your blog that Taylor Swift deleted all of ther songs from Spotify as an effort to sell more CDs it finally clicked that these are real people who are making music as a living. I know it is common sense, but i never really looked at it that way.
Btw, I really like the way you designed the blog!

  3. I always use TSUTAYA for my music resource and as I don’t know how you download music from YouTube, I only use YouTube for finding and listening to music. I found out about this service called Spotify in a news of Taylor Swift deleting her songs in the service, I always knew about this kind of service but never have actually used it before. However, I think not only music service, but there are a lot of other services making money out of deleting advertisement. I never felt it was not ok. On the other hand, I just accepted the idea of paying money to stop the advertisement without question. Now I know that it affects the artists life, I think I should stop and think about using this kind of services.

  4. Before using musics for sale in streaming services, the companies have to take the permission from the artists because the songs are theirs. However, in my opinion, the job of musician is to make listeners enjoy through singing, so they should not complain about how songs are delivered to people. To earn money, for example, artists can hold more conserts or append some special things to their CDs or DVDs which streaming services don't have. I always use TUTAYA to listen to music, so I may not contribute to most artists, but I buy CDs and go to the conserts of my favorite musicians.

  5. Usually, I buy music on apple store, rent it from the store, rent it from my friends, or buy CDs and upload them into my ipod. I like to buy CDs because even if I accidentally delete my music file or the data disappears, I know that I have my CD, so I would not have to buy it again. I have never heard of Spotify, and I don't know how to download music from Youtube, or other sites. It is true that nowadays, you could get music or movies from illegal sites, and I think that is the reason why the sales is decreasing. However, I like CDs because even though it takes up a little space, it is the official thing that the artist made, and I feel proud of owning it for myself. Sometimes, there are tickets for concerts that come inside the CDs that make it more attractive, and you would want to have it more. I do not think there is a big meaning in deleting illegale streaming services, because even if they are deleted once, they will never be permanently deleted, or they will show up again. Doing nothing is not a good thing, but we should make regulations and set fines for illegal downloading and making illegal streaming service sites.

  6. I’ve never used streaming service because I think whole songs make the album. By using streaming service, we can buy popular or favorite songs one by one. But we cannot what the artist really says, because we listen to only one song from an album which has 10 and more songs. An album has its name like photo album and whole album is one work. Artists line up songs in one order to make the album. So I think that it is better to listen to the CD style songs to know meaning and role of one song as a part of one album. But if I buy all songs by using streaming service, it is not bad.

  7. I think that streaming services like spotify is very useful and in need nowadays. Even though I myself have never used those sites to download music, some of my friends do and they think it's very convenient. I think downloading music sites are okay as long as it is fair to the artists. Even if it's a lot more easier to download songs through the internet comparing to going to a store and buying the actual CD, I strongly feel that artists should be payed fairly. When I heard the news about Taylor Swift erasing all her song from Spotify, and how she made Apple move, I was amazed. I hope that these actions will lead to a more better future for downloading music sites which both listeners and artists can be happy.

  8. Your NGO’s idea was very good. Also from your survey, we can see that everyone like listening to music. Many people can listen to music every time and everywhere because iPod or Walkman is prevailed. Then, streaming service seemed to be good and useful. But, for artists, it’s desirable to be bought their CD. They record CD earnestly. So, it’s difficult problem to solve. On the other hand, I agree to streaming service because it can provide everyone who likes music easy way to download music. Streaming service is also owes to development of technology. So I think it’s good that we can enjoy music freely.
